Discipline

There is a saying “To get what you’ve never had, You must do what you’ve never done.” Unfortunately I don’t know the author but this idea resonates with me and I try to think of it every day.   I do believe that discipline, a strong work ethic, and challenging yourself every day will get you many successes in life.  Being complacent will just get you the same thing that you have already.   I recently hiked in a Rain Forest in Costa Rica and surprised myself by completing the course without too much trouble.  It took about 2 hours and was a challenge but I did it by saying to myself “You can do it”.  I have to now transfer that determination to my artwork and set goals and then achieve them.

One goal is to strengthen my website by reaching far more people than I am currently doing.  Another is to expand my gallery participation.  These goals will be achievable but I’ve got to get out and do the work challenging myself to open up and allow my work to seen and criticized.  Ok deep breath in and here I go one foot in front of the other.

Thanks for listening,  Jean

Whistler’s wisdom

I came across a quote that explains something that I try to get across to every artist that I deal with at the Art Center—including myself!

James Whistler said that “An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision”.

That means that all artists, whether it takes 10 minutes to complete something or 10 days, are paid for the final vision that they execute and not the hours put into an artwork. Putting lots of time and effort into art is what every artist does. Some can come to a conclusion faster because they have more experience, some have more skill, some take weeks to get the idea across, and some just try to get the idea out of their head, but in the end it is valuable as the vision of the artist.

Artists–consider the final piece of work that you put out there not the amount of time it took you to complete it.

Art Lovers– next time you look at a piece of artwork consider what the artist is trying to say, and what you see and feel in the piece, but not about the process

Photo for my header above this post

Ireland

I love texture and this photograph has a lot of it.  The texture is why I used it as the header as well.  You can almost feel the gray rainy type of day that is typical on the Emerald Isle.
