I will be exhibiting new photographs and newly framed charcoal drawings, and paintings for the month of April in Mechanicsburg. Brath and Hughes Fine Art at 41 West Main Street. I will occupy the Vault in the old bank building that Mary Beth Brath and Brownyn Hughes call their art business home. It is a really intimate space so I’ve decided to display some of my work from college that I never got around to framing, and some new photographs from a recent trip to Puerto Rico. I really love my charcoal drawings and I can’t believe that I had then in a corner but really I had forgotten about them.

What a beautiful day it is today!  Is this really November?

News about Jean Macaluso Fine Art:  I have recently been accepted into a new gallery, Brath and Hughes Fine Art, and I want to tell you a little about the place.

Brath and Hughes Fine Art is a new gallery in Mechanicsburg opened by Mary Beth Brath and Brownyn Hughes–both very experienced in running a gallery and fine artists themselves.  It is housed in an old bank building with stunning architecture and a bank vault!  I wish them the best of luck with this new venture because I really believe that they have the passion to make this a successful gallery.

Mixing art with business is no easy task, but two experienced artists and  gallery directors hope to bridge the gap that sometimes divides what seems like  two different worlds.

Mary Beth Brath and Brownyn Hughes opened Brath & Hughes Fine Art Nov. 15  at 41 W. Main St., Mechanicsburg, in what was formerly a downtown bank. There,  the aesthetic of the 1,500-square-foot art gallery matches the pair’s goals for  their new venture.

Between them, Brath and Hughes have six years of experience managing an art  gallery, but their experience goes well beyond that.

“We worked together for two years,” Hughes said.

“And we realized how well we worked together,” Brath said, finishing Hughes’  sentence and proving the duo’s point. “I have a business background and Brownyn  is very creative and great at the whole gallery look, putting together the  displays and all that.”

In addition to her background in business, Brath also has an understanding of  art and creative process.

“We’re both artists,” Hughes said. “We both like representing artists, and  there’s a lot of really good artists in central Pennsylvania.”

The gallery is more than a collection of Brath and Hughes’ own artwork,  though. In fact, Brath & Hughes Fine Art is more than just a collection of  work by regionally and nationally known artists.

In addition to featuring the work of more than 20 regionally and nationally  known artists, Brath and Hughes want their gallery to be a place for nurturing  artists and helping them to be successful.

“We would like to have the atmosphere here be that of community … (and)  promote and nurture the artists we represent,” Brath said.

The gallery owners have already begun holding workshops on subjects such as  social media networking to help artists connect with the art business world.  They also offer event consulting and planning services.

“Artists could use some workshops on the business side of being an artist,  and I think that’s something we could help them with,” Brath said. “We’re  artists ourselves.”

Brath and Hughes also hope people looking to buy art will enjoy having their  experience and expertise as artists helpful.

“Viewing art is for everyone,” Brath said. “Some people are intimidated to  come into a gallery, but…”

“… that might be a little bit different because we are both artists,”  Hughes said, this time finishing Brath’s thought.

I recently took a trip with good friends to the Napa Valley.  We had a great time and I took a few photographs with my daughter’s camera (as if I don’t have enough cameras–now I’m borrowing them).    It was not a photo trip but a wine trip so I didn’t bring all of my good gear.  However I took a few memorable photos, and I was playing around with them on the plane ride home.  I’ve discovered a cool app called Instagram and I manipulated a few photos in that program.  Most of the filters will give the photo a vintage look but I like the ones that make the image look old and dirty.

Here are a few examples:

Inspiration comes in many different forms.  One of my Bucket List goals was to see a Bald Eagle–clearly–and that happened this past weekend at our lakehouse in Virginia.  It was soaring just past the house and did so 5 times or so.  Majestic is the word that most often describes this bird but it is an understatement!  It was a thrill—like getting a hole in one or driving your favorite car—but even though I saw it and crossed it off my list I want to see it again.  I did have my camera but didn’t get very good photos but I’ll attach one as proof.

I am participating in a charity event this Saturday (June 11th) called Art on the Farm at the Dickinson College Farm.  This ia a collaboration between CALC (Carlisle Arts Learning Center) and PASA (Pennsylvania Association of Sustainable Agriculture).  For those of you who don’t know I work at CALC.  We have teamed up because we believe that both Art and Agriculture are important to us all and it seems like a natural connection–the art of Art and the art of Food.

I will be donating ‘Gourds’ to the Live Auction and ‘Mouthful’ to the Silent Auction.  Additionally ‘Black and White’ will be used for notecards.
